Discrimination on the basis of caste was banned and the Constitution of India had introduced the reservation system for discriminated communities who were unjustly treated on the basis of caste and backwardness to bring them to the level of equality. It is sad that the system of reservation had not been wholeheartedly implemented due to lack of political will. The new problematic of democracy is precisely majoritarianism threatening pluralism and dominance of castes threatening hope for rights of the poor. This book consists of the proceedings of the National Seminar held by St Aloysius Degree College, on “Caste in contemporary India”. The Essays presented in the seminar are put together in this volume to explore the revival of caste in state and society. The exercise made by St Aloysius Degree College during the national seminar has generated new themes for discussion to explore a national concern.
