Description
As is widely known, Chikkamagaluru district forms part of the formidable Western ghats mountains range – accorded the UNESCO World Heritage status – and is older than the Himalayas. Chikkamagaluru district is also known as the cradle of coffee cultivation in India with the Muslim sufi saint Baba Budan planting coffee seeds brought from Mecca in the Chandragiri hills region in 1670 and the place gaining popularity as Bababudangiri. Chikkamagaluru was famous for the export of iron ore from the Kudremukh Iron Ore Co. Ltd.
